Sycamore and madrone root burl |
|
The body of this bottle is sycamore, and the neck is madrone root burl. The body was rough-turned and hollowed to about 0.5” wall thickness while green, soaked in alcohol for a day, wrapped in paper and dried for about two months. It was then finish turned and re-hollowed. The neck was rough-turned from a small piece of previously dried madrone root burl, glued to the body, and then finish turned to continue the lines of the bottle.

This is a closeup of the decoration, which is a panel that emulates a mosaic tile figure. The scene is that of a grape vine with bunches of grapes. The individual “tiles” making up the scene are colored using prisma marker pens. The “grout” between the tiles is formed by woodburning. The border is gold leaf. I considered breaking the border into tiles also, but decided to leave it whole as contrast.
The decorated panel was first coated with an artist’s fixative and then the whole piece was finished with spray lacquer. The fixative was used to prevent bleeding of the prismacolor marker dye when the lacquer was applied.
